Date Difference Calculator

Calculate total days, elapsed weeks, and working business days between any two calendar dates.

Total Calendar Days Between Dates

280 Days
Weeks & Days 40 Weeks, 0 Days
Working Business Days (M-F) 200 Business Days

Why Calculating Days Between Dates Matters

Accurately determining the interval between two calendar points is indispensable across legal, commercial, and engineering fields. Contractual grace periods, statutory statutes of limitation, interest accrual on commercial loans, project management sprints, and lease agreements all hinge on precise calendar day counts.

Calendar Days vs. Business Working Days

There is a critical distinction between total solar days and working business days:

The Julian & Unix Epoch Time Difference Formula

In modern computer science, calendar dates are converted into Unix epoch timestamps (milliseconds elapsed since January 1, 1970 UTC):

Elapsed Days = |Timestamp_End - Timestamp_Start| / (1000 × 60 × 60 × 24)
Business Days = Σ(Days between Start and End where Day of Week ≠ 0 and ≠ 6)

Step-by-Step Example Calculation

Suppose a software development contract starts on January 1, 2026, and finishes on October 8, 2026:

  1. January has 31 days.
  2. February has 28 days (2026 is a standard year).
  3. March (31), April (30), May (31), June (30), July (31), August (31), September (30).
  4. October contributes 8 days.
  5. Summing all intervals: \(31 + 28 + 31 + 30 + 31 + 30 + 31 + 31 + 30 + 8 = 280\text{ days}\).
  6. Express in weeks: \(280 / 7 = 40\text{ weeks}\) exactly.
  7. Subtracting 40 weekends (80 weekend days) yields 200 Business Days.

Practical Applications

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does this calculator include public bank holidays in business days?

This engine filters out Saturdays and Sundays. Because national and municipal statutory holidays vary widely across jurisdictions (e.g., Thanksgiving in the US vs. Boxing Day in the UK), local bank holidays should be deducted according to regional calendars.

Does the day count include both the start and end dates?

By default, calendar differences measure elapsed duration (equivalent to nights stayed at a hotel). To include both endpoints as active days, add 1 day to the final result.
